Tournament Round 1

We’re playing another game tomorrow morning. The boys came together and played this one like a team and won it with help from everyone, not just a handful of key players making big plays. The final score was 12-7. Awesome game with our defense just as responsible for the win as the offense – a few key stops kept us in the lead at the end.

Speaking of that defense, this past week the coaches made some big changes in who plays where and if today was any indication, it’s an improvement. My little guy now holds the middle linebacker spot – he may be the slowest linebacker in the history of organized football, but the kid is getting it done and is more excited than ever about playing. I think he contributed more today than he ever did on the D-line. For some reason he’s able to bust through in a way that he never seemed to be able to do on the line. Good stuff and he was in on a couple of big tackles and almost single-handedly stopped the one extra point the other team scored…almost.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s Round 1A game. I hate to take anything for granted, but we’re facing the team we spanked 25-0 two weeks ago, so I’m optimistic about our chances of making it to Round 2.

Tournament Time

Yeah, it’s another football post. Fuck you for asking.

The brackets came out on Tuesday. We have an away game against another 6-2 team that we haven’t faced in two seasons. We’ve played the other team (blue) from their town, but never this team (white). In fact, the blue team were the ones who knocked us out of the tournament in round one last year and the team that we beat 25-0 in week seven. So barring some major meltdown, if we win on Saturday, then Sunday should be solid.

That leads us to Halloween weekend where on Saturday we’d either be facing another 6-2 team that we haven’t seen this year or the team that beat us in week 6. Not sure what the odds there are or which way I’d like to see it go if we made it that far. But assuming a win on Halloween, then our All Saints Day game would be against one of four teams all with a losing record – the best of the four being 3-4-1. So that feels pretty good too. Almost like if we win our tough Saturday games, we’re given an easy sacrifice for the follow-up on Sunday each week.

After that it’s pure speculation who we’d face on Nov 7 in the final four game, but I see that one of the undefeated 8-0 teams could come down that bracket and that they don’t play a round 1A game. That could be ugly. Win the game on the 7th and you’re in the championship game played at Welcome Stadium – which is kind of cool for the kids.

So that’s where we stand. Five wins gets to the big game.

Why We Don’t Need Socialized Medicine

Regardless of how much I agree or disagree with any of the ideas in this video, I found the idea of this guy taking someone else’s video and offering a point-by-point retort to be pretty entertaining:

Please don’t post telling me what’s wrong with this video – I don’t care. (smile)

The original video without the interruptions is right here.

So It Begins Again

Football season is back. Today the kids had their “Premier Game” which is just a nice name for a practice game that doesn’t count (think preseason NFL).

We found ourselves at the same field where the season ended last year. Sadly, our opponents strategy stayed mostly the same – play cheap and eventually get away with it – and the clock issues were still there, but the end result was much different. Actually, in all fairness, it wasn’t nearly as bad as last year’s game…but still. This time the kids redeemed themselves a little and squeaked out a 20-19 win in a nail-biter.

The Beavercreek Orange Bantam team seems to be more well rounded this year with several players who are threats and a defensive line that can make a stand like nobody’s business. (yes, my little guy is a part of that line) In fact, while he got a decent share of play time last year based mostly on his effort and willingness to try even if the results were less than great, this year he’s actually having to ask to be taken off the field to catch his breath and get a drink. He’s on the line for the main offense in a Guard position and only gets breaks when the less experienced 2nd offense comes on and he’s not on any discernable rotation on defense in that he’s always on the field in a DT position.

So it’s all a little more fun this year as more of the ideas are starting to ‘click’ with him and, being one of the bigger kids this year, we’re seeing him break through the line quite a bit. Now we just need to find him some speed and he’ll be a serious threat. Right now he’s good for tying up one or two guys on the line which helps open up holes for some of the quicker kids to get through and make tackles in the backfield. Kind of thankless, but important to the overall attack.

We’ll see how the season goes. I think this year’s team has the potential to be a lot better than last year’s (3-3-2).

I wanted to do just a one-liner pertaining to this video, but there are so many possible plays that I can’t even begin to narrow it down. I can’t believe this is really for real…and current.

Wipin’ Stick Part 2

Holy sweet fucking Jesus! My daughter found a commercial for the wipin’ stick just posted to YouTube a few days ago. This is getting bigger than I ever could have imagined:

I’m truly ahead of the curve when it comes to the future of wiping. A visionary, if you will.

Some interesting spring break photography.

Billy, Put Down Grandpa’s Wipin’ Stick

You might remember, it was over two years ago now that I went nuts and started requesting every crappy catalog that I could remember from my childhood. I’d be lying if I said quickly browsing them wasn’t a guilty pleasure. I got tons of them and surprisingly, many just kept coming…and coming…and coming. I thought I’d be safe when we bought the house and moved, but lo and behold, I found a Walter Drake catalog staring me in the face when I checked the mail yesterday. I finally got a chance to look through it this afternoon and it’s full of the usual things that only shut-ins and the elderly buy. One notable exception is that they sell dildos and vibrators now (nonreturnable, mind you – who knew grandma and the weird lady at the end of the street had it in them…literally)

But it was until this evening that my wife found the mother of all craptastic catalog items – The Long Reach Comfort Wipe

I mean, wow! Like holy fucking shit wow! I realize that my life had no meaning before this. This creates so many more questions than answers for me. I don’t even know where to begin with such ridiculous greatness.

All I can imagine is the family making the reluctant visit to great grandpa’s house and little Billy complaining the whole way because it’s so boring there and it smells funny and Grandpa always has saurkraut flavored candies. After a while there, Billy uses the bathroom and finds this thing and comes out swinging it like a sword and making Lightsaber noises, “Zhroooommmmmm Mrooooommmmm” like a kid would do. And Grandpa, all unfazed and ornery would simply bark,

“Billy, put down Grandpa’s wipin’ stick!”

It’s like a little slice of heaven in my mind. Mmmmm.

This is fun.

Smackdown

Have I mentioned that I’m doing a member of the CVB board? (I think she’s something like that – not sure what it actually is)

Being a pillar of the tourism community has its perks – like the ability to score comp tickets for things that you wouldn’t necessarily pay for. WWE tapings, for instance.

We ended up with seats on the on-screen side in the corner opposite the entrance 6 rows off the floor. Pretty sweet seats. If you know where to look in the crowd, you’ll see us plenty. At least we saw ourselves on tonight’s ECW show. I’ve set the DVR for Smackdown and Superstars. I expect more “random faces in the crowd” time.

Was a fun evening. It’s been almost 12 years since we’ve been to a live wrestling event. (before kids!) The kids enjoyed it. My son is a huge Edge fan. We rooted for bad guys all night. I posted a few pics over on Facebook.

Wrestling fans are a goofy bunch. I imagine they’re similar to Nascar fans – just a little to the left. They’re goofy motherfuckers, but on the whole, they’re also some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Real “salt of the earth” types. We never fail to make short-term friends for the evening and tonight was no exception.

Good fun.

Riding With The Mayor

So the Mayor of Cincy (and entourage) stopped by on Friday to check out Diamondback and it just so happened that we rode with them. If I had been thinking more, I’d have totally snagged the on-ride picture – It’s classic.

Check out the video from WLWT.

Kings Island Out The Ying Yang

So I spent the late morning and early afternoon with Jeff at Kings Island for the Diamondback media day stuff. (totally didn’t grab a media kit) (Diamondback Pictures)

Then I got home and we drove back down in the evening to process our passes.

Tomorrow morning (in a few hours, actually) we’re getting up and going back down because my tales of Diamondback goodness convinced the family they need to ride it now…not later.

I’m getting my fill this weekend.

Wrestlemania 25

I haven’t followed wrestling in years. Actually before I was a coaster dork, I was a wrestling dork – even doing a bit of work on the western PA indy scene in the mid 90′s.

The last few months I’ve found myself stopping on WWE Raw for bits and pieces on Monday evenings for lack of better programming on TV…plus my son is just at that age where it all seems cool, so it’s funny to watch parts of it with him.

So over the past few weeks, we kind of got into the storylines leading into Wrestlemania and since we got dicked out of partying on a boat this weekend and had nothing better to do on a Sunday night, we decided to buy our first WWE PPV in over a decade and blow a Sunday night with pizza and Wrestlemania.

Turned out to be a pretty decent time. Some fun matches. The Undertaker/Shawn Michaels match stole the show – and who didn’t expect it to?

One thing I found interesting is how tolerant the crowd has become of blatant mistakes since I last watched regularly. Not sure if it’s slowly been accepted since the sport became ‘sports entertainment’ or since the spots have gotten so big and outrageous..or both. Probably a combo of the two.

The only “You Fucked Up!” chant of the night (and it was short and weak) was during the Money In The Bank match when Sheldon Benjamin tried to sunset flip MVP off of the ladder and (in my professional opinion) MVP pussied out of the move and both men fell awkwardly straight down. That was no fuck-up, kids. Looked to me like MVP got cold feet. Benjamin made him pay moments later when he powerbombed MVP out of the ring and onto the floor, so that was fun.

All in all a good show that built up nicely to the Michaels/Taker match, then sunk a little for the triple threat match and fizzled at the end with the Triple H/Orton match. I know it doesn’t fit the current storylines or direction, but if they had just let the Undertaker and HBK headline, the show would have built to a nice climax and really been a good show.

Was a little disappointed in the Hardy’s match – that should’ve been more than just one high spot after another with no flow. Just didn’t quite click. Also after reading a few reviews, I’m not sure how many people ‘got’ that HBK was coming down from Heaven and the light and the Taker came up from Hell and the darkness. Kinda fun symbolism given the storyline leading up to the match and I think it may have been lost on more than a few people. It was a great match though. What can I say? For 30 minutes I was a total mark again…and it felt good.

Say what you want about pro wrestling and the WWE, but the guys they have doing video work and putting together the promos and such are some of the best….they always have been. Hell, I’d say those little video vignettes that condense a few moths of sotry into a slick little 5 minute package sold us on checking out the PPV as much as anything. They do some slick editing work and make pro wrestling storylines as compelling and entertaining as anything.

Good show that was a little out of order in match sequence and ran probably 30 minutes too long. I’m glad we decided to watch it.

Yeah, it’s old, but it still makes me giggle like a little girl.

SNL March 7th

Last night’s SNL was pretty good top to bottom. That doesn’t happen too often.

Check out some of the other skits – it’s all watchable. Not really a clunker in the bunch. The cold opening is the weakest – as is true about most of SNL’s real attempts at political humor.
