Indeed it seems the tide has turned. I am talking about a specific piece of the Seattle scene - Grunge specifically, hence the title of the post. I think that carries specific connotations within the larger Seattle scene.

Admittedly, I would include Pearl Jam on the edge of that, but they've evolved more into a jam band than a heavy band. And Dave Grohl doesn't do anything remotely resembling Nirvana. He was always a metal guy who fell into the right place at the right time.

And I'd agree with you on Alice In Chain too. Then again, I think they were a metal band that happened to come out of Seattle in the early 90's. They even pretty much say as much in the show.

A lot of Seattle wasn't Grunge, per se. The grunge folks were overwhelmingly douchebags.

"Reduced" to singing kids songs? I'd take a mosh pit of toddlers to dickhead frat boys any day!

The guys from Mudhoney are just pissed that they never had any serious commercial success. I don't think they're representative of the genre. Soundsgarden was full of dicks too, probably jealous because Chris Cornell is too good for them.

I look at bands like Pearl Jam, who are still at it, or Dave Grohl (who definitely doesn't take himself that seriously, and he was in fucking Nirvana!), Screaming Trees, the rebooted Alice in Chains (met Cantrell once, seemed nice enough), and that's what I see. Just because what you saw in that doc was douchebaggery doesn't mean it was representative of the genre. And you think I'm too into the details? I just see a different broader scene.

And neither of those guys were people they talked to. (this was, after all, concerned about the heavy music - all of that Seattle scene wasn't heavy).

Of course, you can cite specific examples that don't match. I can name 80's metal songs that didn't suck too.

After as many years as we've discussed and debated everything under the sun, I think the big difference in us is I feel like I tend to look at things more big picture and you're a details guy. I talk more in general about things than you do.

(In fact - and this isn't in reference to you - it's one of the things that kills me most about the CoasterBuzz crowd. They way they'll get hung up in one little specific thing while completely missing the larger point.)

This is a perfect example of seeing things in completely different ways. The fact that the guy from The Presidents has been reduced to singing children's songs isn't even a factor in my idea that these people - in general - the folks who made, created and were part of that scene come off a complete douchebags are so negative about anything that's not 'theirs' that is almost amazing how close-minded they are. The great irony being they seem (to me) to be the people who most think of themselves as the opposite of what they are.

I'm talking in general and basing it specifically on the people they talked to (members of Tad, Hole, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, etc).

It's because I was in college then. (Zing!) Seriously though, I don't see any of the pretentiousness that you do. Maybe it's because I actually lived in Seattle for a couple of years, seeing Stone Gossard on local TV at charity events, or seeing the lead from the POTUSA doing free shows for kids, but I think you see what you want to see.

You're the most "90's" guy I know. :)

I'm the same age as you. The 90's should have hit me squarely between the eyes too - but it never did...for all the reasons I mention. In the pursuit of being generally pretentious, faux-intellectual and too cool for anything mainstream these people end up having the most closed minds when it comes to things. They think they 'get it' more than everyone when in reality the opposite is probably true. The level of self-importance is laughable.

The whole thing is such a turn-off on every level.

Everything you say they said is true. Where's the problem? Metal and hair band genres put out mountains of crap while the 90's put out mountains of better music. That's why there's a Pearl Jam channel on XM and not a Slayer channel. :)

I've been exclusively using Microsoft mice for ten years, and they work until I replace them out of grossness. They sometimes get to a point where they're too yuck to clean anymore.

Here's the one I love the most... it has been replaced by a newer model, but at this price, it's worth buying two:

My Hyundai dealership explicitly tells me that I may get a call from Hyundai and that they will get shit on if I don't rate them a 10 in everything. They will even call me the day after I get my car back to remind me.

I let the last broad have it. I got her to agree it was worthless but she said "You don't understand how the industry works." That didn't make me happy.

And while I'm ranting, this is the same dealership that had its sales team call me FIRST to sell me a new car after I put an online appointment request in for some tires or brakes. I also let him have it. He said that he just gets printed copies of the requests and didn't know that the service department hadn't contacted me yet.
