Warning: Parental gushing ahead. I don’t blame you if you din’t want to read it.
I mentioned last month as part of a larger post that my daughter was made the 7th Grade “Power Of The Pen” team. It’s basically competitive creative writing, which is kinda cool. They didn’t have shit like that when I was a kid. (not that I’d have done it anyway, but…)
So the District competition was a couple weekends back. We weren’t sure how she did – she didn’t place for a medal or trophy – and the general consensus as far as we could tell was that these kids are fucking serious and it’s takes a hardcore A-game to move on. Not placing at the top didn’t mean you wouldn’t advance, but given what we saw and heard, my daughter was a little disappointed at the end of the day.
Last week she got her scores back and it turns out she crushed two of the three rounds with a perfect score in one of them. The other round she kind of blew – not a bad score, but up against some strong writers. Her advisor seemed to think it’d be enough to reach Regionals.
Today the final list came in and only two 7th graders from her school made it to Regionals and she was one of them. That’s pretty kickass.
The Regionals take place at the end of March. It’s a bit tougher to advance from there to the State level, but one of the kids on the 8th grade team did it last year as a 7th grader, so it’s not impossible. We’ll see, I guess.
