I said it in my comments under this post over two years ago and finally I’m devoting an entry to it.
The best show currently on television by a decent margin is Californication.
The stuff they’re doing right now with Rick Springfield is some of the funniest stuff I’ve seen in a while – from playing himself as a totally skeezy aging rocker to the subtle humor of the rest of the characters calling him by his full name everytime they address him.
Sure, it’s silly a lot of the time with tons of sex and drugs, but I think it’s one of the most human shows on TV too. Some good complex relationships that in the end you know these people care for each other – the realationship between Hank and daughter Becca is wonderful. It’s about as perfect as TV gets for me.
Plus, I wanna be Hank Moody when I grow up.

1) David Duchovny absolutely owns his role on the show. He makes for such a lovable asshole.
2) The complex relationships are certainly a huge part of the show, but I think the excellent casting job they did helps as well.

Absolutely, they nailed not only a great cast, but also the right one.

I loved season 1 of Californication, however I was very disappointed with season 2. The sophomore season is always the hardest for any TV show, so I’m hopeful season 3 will return to the great form of the first season. In season 2, there just didn’t seem to be any plot. Rather than trying to tell a story, the writers just seemed to think, “Let’s try to get away with as much sex, drugs, and profanity as we can.” I’m not a prude, but I need more than that to keep my interest. By the end of season 2, I realized the only character I liked was Becca. The adults were all a bunch of douchebags that I found uninteresting and deserved to have life shit on them. I’m hoping season 3 will be better, but I’ll have to wait until it comes out on DVD.
